She grabbed the world’s attention as the first female finalist in the 1989s Miller Lite Comedy Search series. Fast forward 30 years, she is a well accomplished CBS Daytime talk show host. She is still rolling with her comedy skids and a charming person who stands against rape and suicide.

Early Life & Rough Childhood

Little Rock, Arkansas, born Underwood, was a victim of tragedy from the day she was born. She recently revealed that she was born with a twin that didn’t survive, and she still carries her sister’s birth certificate with her. She grew with two of her siblings, a brother named Michael and a sister Frankie but she also had to witness her sister suffer from polio. Sheryl is now Frankie’s caretaker.

Growing up in a low-income family and lived in hard circumstances, she was molested by her own father multiple times and had to see her own mother stab her father for Sheryl Underwood’s safety. After all that, she then moved to Atwater, California, to attend her high school.

She is also a highly educated woman who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts from the University of Illinois and is a master’s degree in Media Management and Mass Communication from Governors State University.

After graduating, she joined the military to escape her family.

But again, she was raped on her very first posting; she was kidnapped and raped. Though in the hostage situation, the brave comedian kept thinking:

Recovery From Post Traumatic State & Career In Comedy

After leaving the military, she went back to the beginning and started standup skids. Later she gained public attention as the first-ever female finalist in the Miller Lite Comedy Search show in 1989.

She for her appearance in the show, BET awarded her “Funniest Female Comedian on Comic View” award in 1994, and she again brought home BET Comedy Awards’ Platinum Mic Viewers Choice Award in 2005, 11 years after she won her first BETs.

Underwood then started appearing in the movies, and her very first role was Bad Mouth Bessie in 1998s “I Got the Hook Up,” her most memorable part was in 2005s film Beauty Shop as Catfish Rita.

She then hosted the BET’s Comic View, and for a year, she also produced & co-wrote the short-lived comedy series Holla. Over the years, Underwood has worked with big names such as Tom Joyner Morning Show, The Steve Harvey Morning Show as their contributor.

Sheryl also hosted her own radio show The Power, in Radio One’s sister radio network “XM Satellite Radio’s Channel 169. Now, she works for another funnyman Jamie Foxx in his Sirius Satellite Radio channel Sirius 106 The Foxxhole, and she is also your favorite CBS Daytime host for The Talk Leah as Remini’s replacement.

She is a life long member of the historic Zeta Phi Beta sorority and the National Council of Negro Women and the founder of the African-American Female Comedian Association.

She revealed that her husband of seven years committed death in 2011, and she still feels guilty for not being able to identify the signs. However, she reportedly is single as of 2019.
