These 20-inch wheels, which cost $1,100, don't do much to help ride quality. That screen is nestled in the center of a tastefully contoured dashboard, bringing the screen within easy reach of the front-seat passengers, and two thin rows of buttons below make for easy adjustments of climate controls, seat heat/ventilation, parking sensors, and the like. But during the day we spent hustling the XT4 along the picturesque rural roads circumscribing greater Seattle, it became clear that Cadillac has instead aimed for more traditional entry-luxury crossover stuff: quietness, sumptuousness, and user-focused technology. The XT4's exterior styling conveys a greater level of sophistication and complexity than one might expect of such a stubby shape. Part of the issue is that the XT4 is sort of a class in-betweener: It's smaller than a BMW X3 but larger than a BMW X1, for instance, or midway between Audi's Q3 and Q5.

The XT4 never got sloppy or untidy—indeed, it was quite the opposite—we just wish we weren't so surprised. Materials quality is acceptable when closer to its base price, but begins feeling less so as options are added and the price tag rises. Still, as we noted in our XT4 first drive, there's enough novel tech to provide bragging rights, it's obviously a Cadillac in design (and definitely not just a rebadged Chevrolet in execution), and it's a pleasing enough place to sit while scooting around in traffic. Happily, the standard conventional dampers are well calibrated as well. Although much of it is bundled into paid option packages, my XT4 featured all the active-safety tech we've come to expect from modern luxury cars: precollision warning and braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist and automatic high beams. But the competent yet uncommunicative suspension and steering? While the XT4 is good, you'd be remiss if you didn't test-drive some of its competition before plunking down your hard-earned money. Other luxury crossovers have nicer interiors, better ride quality and sportier handling. Cadillac continues to bifurcate its lineup into sporty sedans and milquetoast crossovers. The X2 "coupeover" is a niche within a niche.

A tall driving position and generously sized windows make for decent visibility in all directions. The XT4's turbo four-cylinder is perhaps a bit buzzy at start-up, but once underway impresses with its refinement and low-end torque. Producing 237 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque from 1500 to 4000 rpm, this turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four is so smooth and quiet we found ourselves regularly checking the tachometer to see if it was running.
